It is an uncomfortable skin which, at the slightest contact with external factors, presents different symptoms: itching, redness, heating, tightness. It can occur at any age, by crisis or be permanent. Sensitive or intolerant skin is not a skin type, but rather a skin condition. A person with oily or dry skin can also have sensitive skin at some point in their life.

How does the skin become sensitive ? It is the hyperactivation of the nervous system by the skin cells that causes this skin sensitivity. The hypersensitivity of the skin is the result of a decrease in its tolerance limit. The more sensitive the skin is, the lower its tolerance limit.

What causes sensitivity?
Sensitive skin can be caused by many factors:

– Alteration of the skin’s barrier function which no longer fulfils its protective role
– Psychological factors such as stress
– Hormonal factors (menstrual cycle, menopause)
– Physical factors such as the sun, pollution, temperature changes or hard water.

It was historically used by the Egyptians and the greek philosopher Theophrastus noted in his writings the use of marshmallow mixed with sweet wine to fight coughs. Nowadays, all parts of the plant can be used in phytotherapy, but it is mainly the white roots that are used in the European pharmacopoeia. The roots are ground into a powder consisting mainly of mucilage (L-rhamnose, D-galactose, D-galacturonic acid and D-glucuronic acid) which swells on contact with water. The resulting gel soothes, moisturizes and softens the skin.
